Simpled Down...
May 15, 2003 12:08 am

Tonight my ever-inquisitive class got on the topic of the recent hazing incident at one of the high schools. The conversation was quite amusing and really simplified it to the most basic. After discussing the basic details of it, the conversation went something like this:

R: "So these girls PAID to have this happen to them?"

Me: "Yes."

J (who's first girlfriend just dumped him in front of all his friends): "Girls are evil."

R: "Why in the world would anyone pay to be hazed?"

Me: "That's a really good question. I wish I could understand that mentality. Or maybe I don't. But its a pretty common thing, though to varying degrees, for all kinds of "groups". Even sororities and fraternities do it."

S: "College students do it?? I thought they were supposed to be smart."

J: "Girls are evil."

Me (laughing): "Well, they are supposed to be. But I guess when you want to belong to something bad enough, you'll do whatever."

R: "So let me get this straight...These kids paid to be hazed so that they would then be part of the "cool" senior crowd?"

Me: "Yes."

J: "Girls are evil."

R: "And they paid to be hazed so that people would like them?"

Me: "Yes."

R: "And these senior girls are considred cool? And everyone wants to be their friends?"

Me: "Presumably yes."

R: "What kind of person are they really if they have to PAY someone to humiliate them so they'll be liked? And how cool could they really be if they have to pay to be considered cool? And why in the world would you want to be friends with someone who would shove animal intestines and human feces in your mouth??!"

Me: "Good question."

R: "They should all be expelled from school simply for being so stupid."

And there you have it--hazing as reasoned by a group of seventh graders.
