Needing a Miracle
November 25, 2003 9:42 pm

I have a dear cousin, Jeff, who is in the hospital again. Over the last several years he has had three bouts of leukemia. He's in remission now but over the last several months he has suffered multiple complications. The doctors never gave him this long to live, especially with the complications he has had along the way. At this point, his body is slowly shutting down. Without a miracle, the doctors don't think he'll leave the hospital alive.

He comes from a very loving and tight-knit family. To me they have always been the picture of an amazing family rooted deep in faith (my cousin is a pastor) that will get them through anything. They are not wealthy by American standards but they have a wealth far superior to "things".

After his second bout, the doctors told my cousin & his wife they'd not have any more kids but...surprise! The oldest is 11 and the youngest is about 3. Sadly, only the oldest has any true memories of his father pre-leukemia. He & his wife are absolutely wonderful people. His spirits have been high the last few times I have seen him--much more like the old Jeff. It was great to see them so high in October. Despite the medical complications he was experiencing, I was really hoping maybe he was on the upswing. :(

I really hope Jeff will make it through the holidays. If nothing else but for the kids.
